Feasibility Study

Beyond the Box was an architectural forum sponsored by the Municipal Arts Society and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. The forum was intended to study the implementation of “Big-Box” retail in light of proposed zoning changes for large-scale retail in industrial zones in and around Manhattan.

This site is bound by 125th and 124th Streets, Third Avenue, and Lexington Avenue. This proposal suggested an alternative to “Big-Box” uses on this particular site. In the interests of community benefit, our conclusion was to relocate the flower district to the 125th street site and to forgo the use of superstore retail.
