NYCHA Tenants at Washington Houses Protest Planned Transfer of Garbage Compactors - March 13, 2012
Residents of Washington Houses in East Harlem and members of Community Voices Heard rally and protest during a March 13th debriefing held by NYCHA over concerns about a new development being built by Harlem RBI and its partners within the public housing complex. To to make way for a new charter school and housing complex, NYCHA has leased a large parcel of open space, effectively eliminating an existent parking lot and segregated garbage processing area. (An adjacent city-run park will also be incorporated into the new development.) In addition their concern over the loss of open space, tenants are vehemently opposed to the planned relocation of the garbage compactors to a picnic area situated directly between two building entrances and less than 200 feet from a school. Citing health, safety, environmental, and quality of life concerns, residents have vowed to stop the move. Learn more…
Washington Houses: Pre-Harlem RBI Development East 102-104 Street between 3rd/2nd Aves. - March 9, 2012
The first 5 photos are of the existent picnic area/open space on East 102nd Street within the Washington Houses complex that will be eliminated and transformed into a garbage processing area in spring 2012. The last 7 photos show the large parcel of open space - from East 103rd to104th Street between Second and Third Avenue - upon which Harlem RBI and partners will build an $85 million,150,000-square-foot, 13-story charter school/housing development. The area currently is currently used as a parking lot and segregated garbage processing area serving NYCHA residents. (An adjacent city-run park will also be incorporated into the new development.)
